When I pull the handle to open the tailgate on my 79, the handle always slides past the latch opening thing. I used to be able to hold it on by sticking a screwdriver behind it but its gotten so loose that that won't work anymore. I'm thinking that a new latch mechanism would fix it. From looking at the LMC catalog I can't figure out what part number it is. Have any of y'all had this problem and how did ya fix it? On one page of the catalog it shows the bronco tailgate and lists a latch control mechanism but I can't find the one for the truck.
had the same problem.. if your talking about them little plastic pieces that go on the rod arms... took us forever to find them in that lmc catalog haha
Years back I purchased the lmc t.g. w/o the 'ford'. It is a piece of junk. The first time you stand on the open gate, it flexes and your new paint flakes off!
But regarding the latch and long rods: Replaced them with the lmc ones. It is a VERY difficult swap. The next time I will pull one from the j/y.
I have been having issues with my tailgate latch all summer and thought it was fixed until this afternoon. Currently I have the LMC latch on there, but the metal arm that pushes the pivoting section just seems to be too short and keeps slipping off making me remove and reinstall the latch.
Looking at JBG, they want $70 for a latch that looks to be the exact same thing as the $17 latch from LMC. What's the catch? I have probably removed/reinstalled the latch 10 times over the past year.

You're talking about the handle, correct?
I had this same issue on my 79's original handle. I bought a replacement, not from LMC, but from another vendor - it's one overseas manufacturer that gets sold wholesale to all the US vendors. I had the same issue with the replacement handle, and after the 3rd or 4th time reinstalling it, one of the welded-on nuts snapped off and I couldn't bolt the handle to the tailgate anymore.
I found another handle in the junkyard that didn't have the same "peg" style mechanism; it had some sort of hook mechanism instead. It looks different than my original. No problems since.

Yep, the handle. The pivoting arm slips off of the little "peg", and then the handle is loose and doesn't pull the rods to open the gate. I guess I will have to check a junkyard, because this one sure doesn't work. It sure has been a PITA!
