Changing distributor

I'd like to change my distributor to something better. Do I have to check timing after I change the distribtor? I was looking at this Amazon.com: Mallory 7870406 Distributor: Automotive because I already have a Mallory Ignition Coil.

Yes you will need to set the base timing with the spout out , mark the distributor at the base and where the rotor is pointing , that will get it close.....Lew

Why are you getting a new distributor? Is yours broken? If you're only reason is that you want to get something better, you're almost certainly wasting your money.

Well, I don't know if it's broken but there's defiantly something wrong in the ignition department. I have hard cold starts, weird idle when I start it warm and it's in gear for a little while, and what feels like a miss when I'm stopped in gear or in park I can feel something shake. I've watched the engine rock on it's engine mounts. It's not like "holy crap the mounts are going to break", just more then I feel is normal. I think that's a miss fire.

A new distributor probably won't solve your problem.

What's your base timing set to? When was the last tune-up? Rough idle problems can sometimes be cured by cleaning the throttle body and IAC.

I did a tune up 20,000 miles ago, IAC is new because I was trying to clean the old one but I put the philips screw holding part of the IAC together in crooked, so I replaced it because I figured the small air gap from the screwed up screw hole would cause issues. I have cleaned the throttle body a few times about 4,000 miles ago, PCV has been changed, that cleared up alot of other issues. TPS was changed because the old one failed. I have no idea what my timing is, my dad has a timing light I could check with. How do you check timing anyways? I've never done it.

I won't be able to post back results for a few days because I am going out of town.

There's a small grey plug in the wiring coming off the distributor called a SPOUT plug. You have to pull it out before you check the timing. You may have to clean the balancer off to see the timing mark, or you may have to mark it with a piece of tape or white-out to see it clearly from the top of the motor. Hook up the light and point it at the balancer. It should be at 10 BTDC.

The base timing will affect how the motor starts when it's cold.

Also, are there any codes?

I can't check because I don't have a code reader.

It will be the best $30 you ever spent. Get an equus 3145. If are you broke, you can also read the codes with a paperclip but the process is very error-prone as you have to count the flashes of the check engine light. See fordfuelinjection.com for details on how to do it.

+1 on Andym's suggestions!

I also asked a few months ago about swapping the distributor out with a Mallory, and the concensus was to keep it OEM.
