4.9 ignition timing

4.9 ignition timing
10 btdc
Disconnect pos. Batt And distributor wire
...but where and how do u place the distributor??
I must have tried 20 setups.
Gotta be a minor thing im missing.
Anybody have a working sequence!?

the distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE , the distributor cap is installed with the marked # 1 position facing AWAY from the engine , and the engine cylinders / spark plugs are numbered 1 through 6 , from front to rear
