I'm in a serious need for a new rearend for my '86 Ranger 4X4 S/C. The original one is starting to really howl, and since it's the 7.5", I'm thinking since it needs to be raplaced, I may as well upgrade to either an 8.8 or go all the way with a 9". Any recommendations as to a suitable replacement? I've heard the 4.0 equiped Rangers came with an 8.8" that is just about a direct swap?
I'm also thinking about doing an engine swap in the distant future so from what I know, either one will be a better component than the 7.5"
Go with an 8.8, as it was available on the Ranger. Anything else would probably be too hard to swap. If you can get your hands on a Hollander's exchange book, it should tell you what can be interchanged. Most junkyards have them and can tell you if the 8.8 will interchange.
