The first thing you do is check the timing. Then if it is off, then you can adjust. To check the timing, a common method is to use a timing light. This instrument fires a pulse of light every time the #1 spark plug fires, and this pulsed light is aimed at the timing marks on the engine to allow determination of whether of not the timing is correct.

The ways of adjusting timing depend upon what kind of ignition control system your truck uses. You have an '83 300-I6. Does it have a stock electronic ignition system?

Ok, well the duraspark II system is quite friendly to timing adjustment. Find your timing scale, it should be over on the passenger side of the crankshaft pulley, it looks like this.

Once you have found that, and cleaned it with a rag and solvent, you are ready to go. Found it?

Yeah, if you have the duraspark ignition you "unplug" the vacuum line that goes to the distributor. Pull it off, and plug the line with something (a golf tee works well). Then check timing with timing light, engine running.
