headlight question

I am looking at buying a newer truck. Several I've looked at had a huge clear plastic assemblies and some have had smaller headlights with black trim and amber lens on the bottom and side.

Can someone tell me what the difference is? Is one just a better looking option?

Hear is a link to the black trim one I'm talking about. Cars for Sale: 2006 Ford F250 4x4 SuperCab Super Duty in Moundsville, WV 26041: Truck Details - 299202672 - AutoTrader.com

Thanks,
Buck

The black trim head light you are referring to is on a XL (base model) the "clear" one is from an XLT or up. XL is bare bones (no power anything), XLT has power windows and locks ect. Out of curiosity what are you going to be using the truck for?

That's what I thought, but I don't really know anything about the SD line so I thought I'd ask.

I'll be using the truck to hull hay, manure, firewood, gravel, trash, and get around in the snow during the winter (4x4).

Personally i would go with a v10 or a PSD (7.3, 6.0, 6.4) since your coming from a 460. The Superdutys are heavy and although the 5.4 is a good motor and more powerful then the 7.5 there is a huge difference in power to weight ratio and you might feel its underpowered. Each motor has its quirks and there are many that can you what they are depending on what your looking for. As for the trim packages they go from XL, XLT, Lariat, and King Ranch. Like i said XL is the base and KR is top of the line. 99 - 04 are 4speed autos 05 - 10 are 5 speed auto, you can also get a zf6 from 99 to 10. The 2011+ are 6 speed auto only and only 2 motor options 6.2 gas and 6.7. you can read up more on the SD section and the various motor sections and of course others will chime in.

Right now I'm looking at the 05-07 v-10 6speed trucks. I like the XL package myself, always have. Something about having a vinyl floor, manual windows, and locks, it just says TRUCK!!, at least to me anyway. Some times you buy what you can at the time, which is why I have a XLT Lariat truck now.

Thanks for the input.

Are the headlights on the XL glass??? I got another picture and they sure look like the old style glass headlights. That would be so great if they are, or were.

I agree with the OP, base models are better to me. I don't use any of the advanced features that the new trucks have, and I am content with a seat, steering wheel, gauges and A/C. Less to break, less to mess with. I really like the look of the 08-10 XL front ends especially with black paint. Sealed beam lights are cheaper than most high-quality bulbs for the composite lights and are much easier to change.

The glass sealed beams don't go all foggy either.. Sun doesn't seem to ruin glass like it does plastic!!!

True. However, if your composite headlights are fogging, then there is a leak either in a bulb seal or a crack in the housing. If you want your plastic headlight lenses to maintain their shiny, clear look, install a UV-resistant clear film to them when new and that will prevent yellowing, pitting, and the 3M stuff as been reported to prevent rocks thrown at 70 mph from cracking the lens.

My lights are fine, nice and clear, but you see so many cars and trucks with the headlights so dull and foggy (not condensation) it makes me wonder how the devil they see where they are going and why the formula has not been changed. Maybe it has been and I didn't get the memo!!

Just thinking out loud here..

It certainly does cut light output and thereby visibility. The 3M UV film will keep them new though. The formula has changed somewhat over the years, so it is better than it was, but not prefect. Auto makers are only looking ahead 5-8 years or so. If the car will last that long, they are satisfied. It is all about keeping costs down and profits up at the expense of quality in many cases.
