I have a 390 that overheated, and needs to be re-built. Looking at the prices for doing this around here is roughly $1700 if I want a shop to do it. So I'm looking at all my options.
Since I don't know a whole lot about these Ford trucks, will a 360 bolt on to the existing tranny, or do I need to change that out as well if I get a 360.
Same thing for a 302. I don't think they will bolt up, but not sure.
360 and 390 are the same block, so your trans/bell etc will all bolt up.
302 will bolt up to the trans, but you need a 302 stick bell, clutch etc. Plus different mounts, cooling, all the other business as it's different from the FE motors.
If you are not particular about power and gas mileage, the 360 is the probably the cheapest way to go. Millions served, the main issue would be worn out heads and valve seals.
IMO I wouldn't install anything without going through it. Easy to say when it's not my money I know, but why do all the labor to find out you have a doggy smoker?
FWIW, I'd rebuild the 390 with 9:1 cr and a decent cam. ymmv.

On top of that whats a rough cost estimate?
AZ, you have verified it to be, & are sure it's a 390, most all 352s & 360s become 390s on sale day.
I'd say $1700.00 is not a bad rebuild price.
To ad to 85e150six4mtod, if it is a str. drv. you can do this if it is a C6 auto no.
FYI the moderator in the classified sections, name is Ford six, has a fairly fresh 360 for sale, like $1200, he had videos posted, think hes in Indiana.
Thanks everyone, your input is greatly appreciated! I'm going to look at finding a 360 or 390 around here and see what's the going price. I did find a rebuilit 360 in Payson(if I remember correctly) for $650. Supposedly rebuilt, etc., but you never know until you inspect it carefully!
65-76 (although I think Uhauls still used them until 83) will be a direct swap. I would try to end up with a 390 when all is said and done IMO. Whether that be by rebuilding your current 390, finding a good running 390, or by swapping that crank and rods into a 360. You'll get the same or slightly better mpg and better power with the 390.
I agree with 85e150six4mtod about going through it and inspecting it, and that the 360 while not the best will most likely be the cheapest route.
How much is the rebuild kit you've priced? and how much is shop labor in that $1700 quote?

I can't seem to find any 360/390 that either needs to be rebuilt, or is too far away. I have only priced a few re-build kits, but those are running $350-700. Not sure what the labor is on the rebuilts, but I'm calling em this weekend to find out.
It seems to me that re-building it myself might just be the way to go.
swear by mine! However, planning on going to a 390 soon for the added power. But am pushing 400k so it's expected to be a little tired.. just a little Good luck, which ever way you go.
