Bolt Pattern

What is the distance between the two top bolts on a 400 motor bell/trans housing?

How about a Windsor motor?

How about a Diesel motor?

I'm thinking about buying an E4OD, but I need to confirm that it's a Big Block bell pattern.

7 3/4" for the 351M/400 & 429/460. The width may be the same between the bb & sb, I'm sure the height is different between the 2. The 351M-460 bell housing is 17 7/8" top to bottom.

Thanks, that will help. I'm sure that the 7.3 Diesel bell is larger yet. I don't have to worry about an FE pattern, because the E4OD was never used on an FE motor.

The 7.3 looks very close to a BB pattern!!! Its only about 3/8'' off and easy to mistake!! Just make sure the trans you look at has bolt holes in the trans for the starter if it does NOT then its a diesel trans as those mounted to an adapter plate. Thats the only quick way to tell them apart.
