I intend to correct my pinion angle now. I have about 5 1/2 degrees. Does anyone remember who sells shims? NAPA sticks in my mind from a post here long ago but I may remember incorrectly.

Thanks,

Napa does sell them - I'm going from memory here but think it's pn 1167 for the 5 deg shims. If you need more info I'll dig thru my receipts - just for you!

You do mean that you have 5 1/2 degrees MORE than your tranny output yoke angle don't you?

On my '48 I'm within 1 or 1 1/2 degree difference between the two and its seems to run fine that way.

John, put that guy back as an avatar - he's even creepier this way

If all I get at Napa is a stupid look I'll get back to you for a PN. To clear up what I have for angle; if I level my trans pan, my differential pinion shoots a 5 degree angle downward. Pinion angle is tough to measure with my Home Depot tools, but it is clearly shooting down. I am sure under 2 degrees would almost certainly be vibe free. 5+ is too much I think you'll agree.

Fenders, WAIT! Don't want you getting any stupid looks at NAPA. I went sifting thru my old invoices and I was close, but no cigar...........

PN you want is 704-1168 for the 5* shims. I believe that's what they had to look them up under. Nothing came up under caster wedges.

Your pinion angle needs to mirror your tranny angle. I'd suggest buying a magnetic angle indicator (available at most parts houses for under $20 - I've even seen them around $10.

I can't remember where your project is at present - if your tranny is set where you want it, determine the angle at the back of the u-joint yoke. Then check the angle of the pinion (easy to use the u-joint yoke here too). They should be within 1-3 degrees of each other. The caster shims under the spring perches allow you to hit this target.

In case anybody else is reading this - the 1-3 degree difference allows the u-joint needle bearings to move enough to keep themselves lubricated. If they don't move they wear out quicker. Actually 5* would probably work - under extreme lift situations some guys go upward toward 13* but most I read says u-joint life is very short beyond 9* offset.

In most of the set ups I've worked on the tranny typically points down 1-6* and the pinion points up, but any combination is possible.

Thanks Tim

I have the magnetic angle finder you refer to. Little tough to get a reading on the 9 inch but I'm accurate within a degree which is close enough.

NAPA had them, Denver, CO Napa that is. They wanted me to pay shipping and all that noise. It dawned on me that my wifes third cousin-in-law twice removed now works at a truck driveline shop. He is hooking me up in a couple days. Thanks for your trouble.

Sounds like they're really goin' out of their way for you fenders! My local NAPA got them for me overnight out of Spokane and no shipping charges either.

Want me to pick up a set for you when I'm in town tomorrow? I have to stop at NAPA anyway.
