Anyone know where I might be able to find a chart that list the trans Ford used? What I have is an 85 4/od behind a 300/I6 and would like to find a 5/od trans with a little lower 1st gear to replace it with. So would like to find a chart that list gears, overall lengths and applications so I could maybe find a junkyard trans.
(click on "1997-2011 help file", then "transmission ratios" under "Reference".)
Note the "--R1" model is for Rangers and won't bolt up to the 300, and "--HD" is the ZF.
The Mazda will be better for mostly street and road use, as the ratios are closer. A 3.7 to 4.10 axle with 32" tires, give or take, will work real well.
The ZF will work better for heavy loads due to the lower first gear and overall heavier construction.
Both are hydraulic clutch with internal slave cylinders. Your '85 (like mine) should have a hydraulic clutch already. You will need to adapt the master from the donor truck though, as I'm not sure "mix and match" works for this swap.
Thanks for the reply. What got me thinking was that I used to have a 96 F150 with the 4.2L with the 5sp trans and loved it. But really don't know what type trans it was or anything about it. Just thought it would be nice behind my 300.
