I need a chart that lists the ratios of different manual transmissions--each gear

I know I have seen one before but now I cant find it. I want to know at least the first and last gear ratios on different transmissions. Specifically looking for information on the New Process 5 speed Direct 541-FL and 542-FL. This trans is in some F600 trucks.

I cant find diddly on the gear ratios, except some were overdrive, and others were direct in 5th gear.

When I got my transmission, I learned it had been originally fitted to a Studebaker truck. The 540 was used in Dodge, Studebaker, Ford, Chevrolet, and International. They all had different input shafts and most had different output yokes.

I suppose it may be that there are externally visible markings that will tell you if it is overdrive, but the best way with the New Process is to put it into gear and count the number of times the output shaft turns with one turn of the input shaft.

The question is.... Which gear?

Consider where 4th gear would be in a 4-speed; you would move the lever to the right and pull it back toward you. That is where direct is on the 540, whether it is an overdrive or not. Taking the lever to the right and then forward puts you into either 4th, if it is a 5th direct transmission, or into 5th, if it is an overdrive transmission.

If you take that NP540 that has an overdrive 5th gear, pull it to the right and back, where you believe 5th is located, and then turn the input shaft one turn, counting the output shaft’s turns, it will seem direct. That is because that is the direct position.

Move the lever forward and check it. If overdrive, the output will turn faster than the input. If a 5th direct, the output will turn slower than the input.

A lot of the junk yards historically have kept their truck transmissions in small buildings or old school buses. If you drag one out, check it like I told you. If you find an overdrive, some of the smaller yard operators won’t know how to check to see if it is overdrive. If you put it where most people would think 5th was located, it will be direct, and you can say to them that it is a 5th direct.

I have been told that the OD 5-speed was pretty common in school buses.

Thanks a lot! Thats exactly what I needed. Although, Numberdummy said the code says its a 541-FL. I've only heard of the 542-FL which is in your list. Jake

his books don't know everything, nor does the chart I found on the internet. Take what you read and hear with a grain of salt.
