EGT gauge question

I just ordered the autometer phantom egt gauge and it is in the box reading 600 degrees. Will it drop to zero after i install it, or should I return it before I even open the box. Thanks in advance.

Once power is applied, it will drop to zero, then go to whatever the temp is inside the manifold. The power to the meter was turned off when it was reading 600.
