I bought a used column and my intent is to get it powder coated and then rebuild it and then replace my column. My issues is that I don't think I can have the 3 speed linkage in the column when they powder coat it. Can I remove the 3 speed linkage? If any one has done this please let me know.
Arnything going into the powder coating curing ove must be able to resist 350 to 450 degrees. I believe the three speed linkage has nylon bushings on it; they will have to be removed before the process begins. I've torn down a 3 speed column before, and I think it was pretty straight-forward. Just watch how it comes apart; and you can put it back together. Almost everything in the column, that can wear out, can be purchased on line.
I tore down the column in my 67 ( column shift C6 ), sand blasted it, and powder-coated it-it looks great. You should replace the spacers, along with the bearings-top and bottom. It's great to turn the wheel with no scraping or grinding! Don't know if yours has a rag joint; but if it does; this is a great time to replace it. Good luck!
