X2.....

The pedal box on the firewall below the dash has plastic bushings that like to wear out and cause the pedal travel to decrease, thus causing the hard shifting.

And check the fluid level in the reservoir. Mine was like that when the slave decided to develop a little leak and my reservoir got empty. A new slave fixed my problem.

Look under the dash and push on the clutch pedal, see if you can see the shaft shifting in the mounting plate, if so, you need bushings!

do the 92-97 trucks suffer from firewall cracking around the clutch master like the 87-91 trucks did??

With just 1st and reverse I'd suspect something not allowing the input shaft to stop before anything else. Pilot bearing. I've had a little problem with those lately. I just finished rebuilding my transmission because of it tearing up so many pilot bearings. It's fixed right now. If it was something with the clutch pedal then it would be weird in all gears. Open your windows and see if there is a chirping noise coming from underneath when you push the clutch in.

The rest of the gears are syncro'ed. They slide in without even pushing the clutch. I would vote for the clutch pedal bushing as well.

The rest of the gears don't have to stop in order to engage. The synchro ring and hib should take care of them but both sides are spinning. 1st and reverse do have to stop. Only one side is spinning when the pilot bearing has hold of the input shaft. The sliding sleeve on those two are near impossible to move if the input shaft is spinning on one side of it. The clutch pedal can cause it but I doubt that's it. The clutch doesn't have to go down very much to disengage the clutch disk and there is a lot of room for slop on it.

You are welcome.

Not as bad but I am sure it has been seen. There is a metal plate that was added to the firewall on the newer ones to make it stronger

The pedal box has been known to crack also.

ok. i was not sure if they newer trucks still had the firewall problem or if it had been addressed with the introduction of the 92 body style.
