Dan, you sure made it look easy! Putting the windshield sealer in the glass groove went well, but that #&@! gasket slithered like a snake as I installed it on the edge of the glass. I should have had a helper. The black goop spread everywhere, the gloves stuck to the adhesive pulling the rubber gasket loose and pulling the gloves off, so I jettisoned them and ended up covered fingers to arms with the black, sticky stuff! What fun!
Next day, the rope trick worked well (I had a helper pushing in on the glass.) and the windshield slipped into place nicely. More black goop seeped out around the frame and a big clean-up job followed. I took a bath in lacquer thinner!
But thank you for your step-by-step instructions. The job is done. The windshield is in place. I can move on to the side and vent windows. Oh, maybe next year.
It's not an easy job....I went through a roll of paper towels and half a box of the nitrile gloves. I use plain old paint thinner on a paper towel to wipe off the excess goo as it started to squeeze out.
My wife and daughter and I installed the front and back windows in my '51 F1 today. Thanks Dan for the super tutorial. I have been avoiding this task for a while now. Thanks to the pictures and instructions, it went smoothly. The clean up was the biggest part. The 5 star trim did add another level of difficulty though, getting the stainless to lay flat.
The window that i removed from the truck last fall did not have any sealer that I could see. Neither on the windshield nor the back window. However the windshield did leak in the lower right corner, and someone had used silicone to attempt a fix there.
Would'nt it be better to install the gasket dry to see how it fits, then mask off the windshield with painters tape around the edge of the gasket? that way it cuts down on wiping away excess sealer? i may be wrong. i have never installed a windshield, i have removed a few but that's it.
