I know this is probably suspension related, and I know if I wanna keep this truck I should replace all of my rubber suspension parts, just looking to maybe narrow down the issue.
When I back out of the driveway, or pull in, I hear this "clunking." But it sounds like it's coming from both the front or back depending on whether going forward or reverse.
I had thought it might have been my tailpipes shifting and contacting my hitch frame. But it sounds more strucutral, like in the suspension, or drivetrain.
Not a whole lot to go on. It could be a u-joint, if each time it clunks it's right when you change directions, like forward to reverse. Check around the u-joint bearings cups for rusty metal particles.
If the clunking primarily over rough or uneven ground, the causes are several. Deep pitched could be upper or lower ball joints or Pitman arm. A little higher pitched could be tie rod ends. Other causes would be broken shock mounting bolts ( or missing bolts ), stabilizer links.
A typical clunking noise could also be the drive shaft yoke just needing some grease ( on the splines ).
Didn't think of the U-joint, but I was thinking that that might need to be replaced as I've done a significant amount of towing.
I just looked, the bottom of the rear differential housing is wet, not dripping, but the housing has definitely been leaking, a closer look it may be the forward seal.
I also think there was a TSB about a clunking sound with this year truck, but it just started happeing for me.
