5.8 Headers: What should I do with the EGR?

Hey guys. I have a set of long tube Hooker headers for my '94 F150 4x4 5.8. My headers do not have a port for the egr tube and I was thinking of deleting the egr.

Are there any complete egr delete kits available for this?

Or should I weld a bung on the #1 cylinder header tube and make a custom tube for it?

Also, does any one make a 3" y-pipe for headers on this pickup? I currently have a 3" single exhaust through a 40 series Flowmaster muffler.

Last Question- These headers have an O2 sensor port on one of the collectors. Will the sensor work fine in just the one header or is it better to put the sensor in the y-pipe where it is sensing exhaust from all eight cylinders?

Thanks for the Help!
Robb

well q1- you could go either way, the kits have no garentee that they will work, so you could just make a sheet metal block off gasket for the egr and just bolt it back up with no tube (leaving it plugged in and the vacuum to it to keep the CEL off)

q2 i believe pacesetter has the y-pipe (but why bot run true duels?)

and q3, i am pretty sure you want the o2 in or as close to the collector as possible (note- i had to plug my pass side bung because the o2 was to close to the tranny cooling lines, so i used the bung on the drivers side and had to extent the wires a bit.

If you have the know how this is what a I would do. As to why Ill make a quote...

This is a quoted response to when I was looking to delete the EGR. I have learned to respect what this guy has to say:

First, FTE doesn't use the OOTB search function. It's been modified quite a bit and actually works quite well. So use the search, as there is a ton of information in this forum about the EGR eliminator.

What you will find out about it is this. Don't use it. the EGR system, when working correctly, will give you better gas mileage. Not having it hooked up with either cause pinging due to high combustion chamber temps, or a 2-4 MPG mileage ding.

2x or 4x4 truck ?

I say you will be fine sampling a bank of four cylinders. Eight of course would be better, but 4 will do the job.

Glad to have you as well!

You didn't specify if it was 2 or 4 wheel drive. What I was getting at is the y pipe you were looking for off your headers. If its 2wd Id make it duel exhaust and scrap the single (not that you have to or will see a huge gain) But... if its four wheel drive it has no advantage with all the bends needed. ("so I have read" No dyno in my garage to know, "as fact")

I was lookng at Y pies last night in a Jegs catalog. They stock most of what you would need to do whatever you want to do.

It is a 4x4 supercab short box pickup. Will these y-pipes bolt up to most brands of headers- or what i should ask is do all brands of long tube headers have similar center to center distances on the header collectors?
Thanks.

OK, I see what you looking for now. Pre-fab y pipe to header for your application ... Have not seen these. They have it all to build your own but I dont think one is built to fit. I have been wrong before! Hell, I am married, don't remember ever being right since... I have seen a ton of bolt on header back kits for our trucks none used a Y pipe. Do you have welding skills ? Or a buddy that does ?

While I hunt around for one or a kit that will work.. You have 3" header collectors correct?

Unhappy

Yes I can weld and they are 3" collectors. The headers actually already have about 5" long of 3" diameter pipe with gaskets bolted on to the end of the header collectors. With these already on, I should be able to make a universal kit work out pretty good. Thanks for the help.

^ I didn't mean to put the frowning face at the top of this last post- I must have hit it by accident and now I can't edit it out. Whoops^

No.. me neither, so I created my own from mendrel bent tubing sections. Having lived with this for a couple years now I'd advice you use 2.5" tubing throughout and something other than a DroneMaster muffler. I have been through 3 mufflers( Super 44, 50 series, and a custom creation built from the shell of the 44), and have played with positioning it and there is still too much in-cab droning noise for my tastes, and it's all a result of the large volume catback.. a 3" single into a 3.5" tailpipe and these chambered mufflers that amplify the resonant frequencies. The system sounds awesome when you're on the hammer, but it's just annoying when cruising. I'm gonna switch to the largest Superturbo you can buy which is about 3' long and hope that takes the edge off it. If your headers fit like these old Flowtechs this is what it could look like. The O2 sensor is in the passenger side header collector and I added a bung for the EGR on one of the header tubes. I didn't have a 5.8 specific EGR tube at the time so I used a 5.0 version instead which fits fine. I used the female end of another EGR tube for the fitting.

Great pictures Conanski! I think I will do the same for my EGR tube. Is that the only line that needs to be modified with headers on this 5.8? I think I will also build a similar exhaust on mine minus the cat. My 31" BFG Mud Terrain KM2s howl a fair amount at speed so I will try it with the "dronemaster" first to see how the cab noise is. Thanks!

Conanski, I highly recomend the Dynomax Super Turbo model 17792. Dynomax Performance 17792 - Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers - Overview - SummitRacing.com It has a larger case 5.5"x11"x16" and has 3" internal tubing. I like the offset in/out of this muffler because of the "S" design of the Super Turbo. Should flow better than the muffler you have now. I used it back in 05 on a V10 and it came out great. I'd change the tail pipe to 3" also.

Thanks for the suggestion that's what I'm after but.... there's no way that it flows better than what's on the truck right now... I call it my "Blond" muffler because there's nothing but a straight piece of 3" perforated tubing down through the middle.. like an Ultraflow. I'm not that worried about flow anyway.. this system is already too big for a 5.0 and I'm kinda partial to the Superturbos after having one on my old truck. They seem to flow pretty well also despite the big S turn.

I have set of the coated Pacesetters but have not installed them yet. The few threads on here all point to them being the best fit by far.
