Muffler, tailpipe

Boy, mod fever is setting in. Needing to control$$$, I was wondering if it was worth replacing the stock muffler and tail pipe with a quality performance muffler and tail. I really dont want or can spend $ on a whole new system yet!

Would this lower the EGT a little and produce small HP gain? Which muffler would suit my needs,$?

Input much appreciated for this newbie diesel owner.

Thanks,
Mike

It depends on what other mods you are going to do. If you are planning on installing a 80 HP chip or ar above then you will need a full 4" exhaust from the turbo back with a full flow muffler plus gauges. If you aren't planning on chipping the truck or maybe using a mild chip then a 3 1/2" down pipe with a full flow muffler should be good.

I am not planning on adding a chip at this time or near future. Just wondering if it was worth just switching out the stock muffler and tailpipe with a flow through? Not interested in sound, just alittle performance, maybe slight hp increase and more importantly lower EGT. Suggestions? I am trying to limit $ at this time!

Exhaust mods without other mods probably won't be worth while.
If you aren't planning on chipping or going with a program then I'd leave the exhaust stock. You might consider a 3 1/2" downpipeand a full flow muffler but you won't gain enough to justify the price. Just my opinion.

A local exhaust shop suggested that I simply remove the muffler (I'm running a 60hp program). It sounds no luder, but you can hear the exhaust fluttering (some might say it is annoying).

I am new to diesels and there are so many products out there to choose from. I don't want to waste my money, but DO want lower EGTs, maybe gain some MPG, and maybe a quicker response on acceleration. I know that these will be slight, if any, but lower EGT would be great.

I currently am not towing anything and probably won't in the near future (just wanted a PSD), so chipping is not really in my plans.

Would leaving the stock downpipe connected to a 4" system after that , along with a less restrictive air intake like a Tymar be worth it??? Would it accomplish the lower EGTs and slight performance increase. Head is spinning with mod fever overload. Please give me your .02! Thanks!

I would listen to another PSD without a muffler before you go and hack yours off. I did this and i could not stand the "FLUTTER" that came without having a muffler on the truck. I think i drove the truck like that for a week before i put a Flowmaster on it. The noise is due to the turbocharger "chopping" the air as it comes out of the motor.

Getting a new airintake , along with a bigger exhaust will help tons in the power, throttle response, increase in MPG department.
Then you could always upgrade your downpipe at a later date. I noticed a HUGE difference in throttle response with just putting a AFE intake setup on my truck.

My business partner has a '97 F-250 4X4 PSD and he put a flow through muffler on and said he experienced a "noticable" difference in performance with no other changes. I have no specs to prove how much, just his word. The down side, as mentioned earlier, is increased noise. I've driven with him several times since however, and compared with my '86 it sounds like your driving in a lincoln. Perspective is everything I guess.

Hope that helps a little.

Has anyone ever heard of an AirRaid intake system, I looked through severa of the threads and havn't found anything listed. I did pick one up based on a friends recommendation (of course he ownes the store) and he stated that he had numerous good reports on the improvement on performance. The filter looks just like a K%N but I don't know.
Any information will be appricated, I'm still trying to decide on which exhaust system I'll pick up. I'm kind of leaning towards the Banks but they are really pround of them. Any thoughts?

I recently installed my Tymar intake system and like it enough to reccommend it!

I too have an AFE intake and flowthrough muffler. This has increased my horsepower, MPG, and has decreased my EGT's. I believe I have about $250 invested in these two items. Purchased my AFE new on e-bay, have a friend who owns a muffler shop. Your cost depends on who you know, what and where you buy, but I do reccommend them. Good luck and happy trails!

I have the AirRaid Intake installed on my 01 PSD. It looks like the AFE Magnum Intake. I wanted the Tymar, but I live in the south and I thought that it might ingest to much hot air from the engine compartment. So I went with the "Cool Air Dam" CAD design that the AirRaid has. No problems so far. Good Luck!
