voltage question

so my pos. terminal on my battery keeps getting too much voltage. i have had a problem with the current from the pos. terminal since about a month after i got the truck. its a 92 f150 302 and i know they have a problem with the wires corroding and must be stripped back after a while, but these are new wires. anyways, to the point! i am thinking that the starter, which i believe is stock, is pulling too much voltage and causing the terminal to fry. does that make sense to anyone?

The best way to figure out what the problem is, is to get a digital multimeter out and check voltages for starter and alternator to see whats going on.

Not to sound like a jerk, but the starter pulls amps, not volts. Think of a garden hose. Amps would be the water flowing through the hose (volume), and volts would be how much pressure is behind the volume. My question is this, is there any effect to the starter connection at the solenoid? Is it burning up there? An over voltage situation shouldn't cause a termination failuer when you are talking the voltages under the hood of the vehicle. Now, a poor connection, and/or a weak starter will.

Another possibility is the cable is too small, some of the cheap cables are the same size (outside) as good ones, the problem is the cheap ones have small wire and big insulation.

If you got the cable at Wal-mart or some place like that you "may" have a cable that is too small..

sparky-thanks for letting me know that actually. its only burning up at the pos. terminal and the connection is fine. i have stripped the wires back a couple times to get rid of corrosion for a better connection and have recently replaced the wires with wires from an auto store. they arent the best but they arent too small. i still have the problem starting after all that so thats why i came to this theory. im going to check it with a volt meter tomorrow so i will post with the results. thanks guys
