Which cam for 400

I have an edelbrock intake and 600 carb. I was thinking of getting the comp cams k kit but i heard 400 like dual pattern cams and i don't think this cam is a dual pattern. 218 intake 218 exhaust duration 494 intake 494 exhaust lift. Has any one ran this kit? how did it run? would i have to cahnge my torque converter? i have a 1979 f150 4x4

Which cam for 400

I'm getting a Comp 268H cam. All i know is that i Clevelands like high exhaust profiles if that helps at all. But from the specs ive read the kit looks pretty solid. Never used it tho.

Which cam for 400

A dual pattern cam will have a larger exhaust duration than the intake. For example a 255/265 Advertised duration cam which is good to run on on a 400 truck motor that sees daily driving duties.

The 268 single pattern cam will give a slightest bit of an idle lope and good highway power but you sacrifice a little on the low end stop and go grunt.

Fords in general like dual pattern cams. AFAIK most of your OEM Ford cams are dual pattern.

I have that cam in my 79 2wd 351M. I like the cam. It has a nice lope at idle and runs good. The motor ran a lot better when I added the headers. I also have tried 3 different carbs (<a href="http://www.motorhaven.com/">Holley</a> #3310,4776,and 1850). The #1850 600cfm, run the best. I have a stock converter and a 273 gear.

Which cam for 400

I installed the same comp's cam kit in my 77 F150 4x4 with a <a href="http://www.motorhaven.com/">351m </a>about a year ago, and I'm very pleased with the results. The engine has the Edelbrock performer 400 non E.G.R. and the 670cfm <a href="http://www.motorhaven.com/">Holley</a> street avenger, the rearend has a locker with 3.50s. The cam has a nice lope at idle. As far as sacrificing low end torque, I think its very little if any, maybe because the noticeable power and torque increases are above 1500 rpm. I also have the stock converter and manifolds.

i have used the 268H in a 351C. it's an awesome runner! my buddy had a 68 vette with a "built" 427. that motor was a runner, too. before we took it apart, we thought it had some killer cam in it. Guess What? 396 with a 268H! and it works with stock rockers. i only had 2.75 gears in my torino and that cam would not bog down with a slightly modified stock 2bbl carb. excellent lopey idle that gets better the lower you set it. no loss of low end power with this cam! i liked it so much i have a new one in the box on the shelf right now waiting for the next mild build.excellent choice!

I don't really want to take my engine past 5500 rpm. When does the cam stop making power. I'm only going to have a 600 cfm so i don't know if that will really be a problem.

Mine will float the valves at 5300. I shift at 5000. I have the springs that went with the cam.

Which cam for 400

comp cams on line catalog says 1500-5500 rpm for the 268H. they also have a "dual energy" cam, they say it will give up some bottom end for mid and top end power. i recently saw a post elsewhere that a 400 ran better with a single pattern cam than a dual pattern, which goes against accepted theory for these engines. but i'm sure it depends on the entire package(umteen variables). Todd, are you sure your springs are shimmed to installed hight spec's?
