I have a 97 F250HD, e4od, 351w, 4x4. It is the older body style. Lately my speedometer needle acts like it gets hung up n the snaps free. Then the needle bounces around a good bit. It is starting to happen all the time. My local parts store, said that they don't list a speedo cable for my truck..?? If anyone could help me out with the first thing to check or replace and then maybe the next few things to check out, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you
There is no speedo cable with your truck, its all electronic.
Does the OD indicator on the shifter blink when the speedo acts up and tranny shifts funny? If so, the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) located in the rear axle most likely be the problem.
I have seen the PSOM(speedometer itself) malfunction and cause issues. If the needle is bouncing around but no tranny problems and if you have cruise control fully operatinal, its most likely the PSOM(speedo head) is bad.
I'm having the same problem as well with my 1996 F150 5.0 4x4. The O/D light does blink after about 5mins of bouncing needles. I have replaced the VSS in the rear-end already and it had no effect. I'll keep close watch on this thread!
Bear108, with truck shifting fine, I'd say the PSOM meter movement is the problem. Its probly time to hit the junkyard and find another PSOM and swap it in.
Jlynch, the same could be for yours, my 95 E350 had hard shifting and the OD light blinking, also the cruse control quit working, I found the PSOM was the cause of the problem.
There's a thread about the PSOM with capacitors leaking causing the PCB to be dammaged, I'll try to find it and post the link here
