FB891, Hope to get my 99 back tomorrow from the dealer. Oil leak from head gasket - right rear of engine, 50,000 miles, no extended warranty. After the dealer diagnosis I went straight to Ford Customer Service. Since I've been at the dealer a few times for service, and they want me to be a happy camper, and I had all the complaints from this site, my liability was 30% - they (Ford & the dealer) covered the other 70%. Yanking the engine to replace the gasket - total ~$2,000. They also said power steering pump and hoses are leaking - another $400.00. I'm searching for cronic problems now to see if I can work a deal with the power steering repair. They've had my truck for a week now. I'll update after I see the bill.
Updating my earlier post - $604.20 is my portion of the head gasket replacement, includes NJ tax. FYI - engine was removed to perform service. Power steering parts and labor - $491.38. Total = :-staun Currently looking at aftermarket warranties.
OK, I've just read all of the posts on the cylinder head/gasket problem and I need some advice.
I've been looking at a used '99 Expedition EB 4X4(1FMPU18LXXLC51622) and I'm wondering if there is any way I can protect myself from this problem? It has 55K miles, one owner and is in perfect condition. He wants $18,000 for it which seems like an OK price, but not if it starts leaking in a 1000 miles.
Should I start looking for 2000's instead or would this problem have most likely shown up by now? What should I look for?
