<HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1> So I have a 1990 Ford F-350, 7.3 IDI, Hypermax Turbo. I am new to diesels, so my problem is as you can guess is starting, I tried to start it this morning, the wait to start light, stays on for 8-10 seconds then goes off like normal, but I do not hear my glow plug relay activate, the click, click, click, usally there are like 8 clicks, I only here 1 and that is about 10 seconds after the wait to start light goes off. Side note, I locked my keys in the truck last night , with the keys in the iginition in the on postion. Could this have burned out my controller? They were locked in there about 30 minutes before I could get back in the truck, I also locked myself out of my house at the same time, , I know, I know, great way to start the weekend. Anyway, it cranks, my battereis are fully charged, just charged them last night, tested all my glow plugs this morning, they are all good, I have fuel, any ideas? I have not checked my starter or altenator, is there a way to check these without yarding them out of the truck? Thanks alot for any ideas, you guys always seem to have the right awnsers.
you should start it as soon as the wait to start light goes out. the clicking is the controller temporarily tossing power to the plugs to help it stay running after starting. if you wait till the clicking stops to start it, the glow plugs are already cooling off and it will make starting harder.
and leaving the key on will not do anything to the controller.
No white smoke, fuel filter is fuel of fuel, but I have not taken it off to see if fuel actually is being pushed out while I am cranking. Thanks any other ideas?

I did not know that the glow plugs cool off that quick, I will remedy way
I start it, so is there anyway to test to see if the controller is still working, I did not want to just buy a whole new glow plug relay, I called and my local shop and they said I have to buy the whole control unit as well as the solinoid(spelling ?) and it was like 90 dollars. Not a huge amount but I just do not want to start throwing parts at it.
My son's truck had a leak at the fuel warmer plug on top of the filter housing last winter and didn't want to start.I got it started by loosening some of the injector lines and bleeding some air out of the lines. She started and ran home.He hasn't had a starting issue since we fixed the leak.I'm guessing it was getting a little air in the filter when it would sit and the fuel would leak off at the filter.
if your wait to start light is coming on and you are getting power to the glow plugs when the engine is cold, the controller is working.
do you know what type glow plugs are in it? it could be bad glow plugs.

Dont know the type of glow plugs, they did all seem to test out fine though, I am begining to think that I may be getting air in my fuel lines somehow. Thanks for the reply
