I'm working on a '78 F-100, and I recently installed a new radiator support I got from a parts truck. The parts truck was a 75, and as a result, the radiator support was too wide for the radiator I had on the original '78 support. I had no idea there were different sizes for different year models... Could anyone recommend either where I can find a radiator that would fit or if there is something I need to do to make the original radiator fit? Thanks!
You can either get a larger radiator for the 75, but will need to know what size engine it had, or you can get a couple pieces of sheet metal to make filler panels to go between the support and radiator.
I'd suspect the 75 was a 360/390. Those tended to have fairly large radiators. Unless your current radiator is in great condition (fairly new) you might be better off just replacing it with a bigger unit. That would give you even better cooling capacity.
While both things that Rouge_Wulff mentioned would work, I think it all depends on what you are running. I have a 78 F100 with a 300 CID and my radiator looks like yours. If you're running an a six or 8 go with the larger radiator rather that the patch pannels. Most parts stores can get you a radiator for nearly a $150.00. If that is to pricy go to a rediator shop and see if they have a referbed one. It looks like your doing to nice a job to fix your truck up to start patching it up like an innertube.
Unless I were building a show truck that someone who knew these trucks was going to judge, I would fabricate a bracket for each side of the radiator. Paint the brackets to match and no one will know or care.
I think the some of the highboys came with that support too. Why not match the radiator to the support and not have to worry about
cooling issues later.
