I currently have a 74' with a 390 that I am resoring and the radiator core support down by the passenger front wheel is gone from rust. I also have a 78' parts truck that I "borrowed" the axles and power steering unit from sitting behind my shop. I looked at the core support on the 78' and it is in pretty good shape, but it has the smaller radiator opening (22-1/2").
My question is assuming that that core fits into my 74', would you see a problem going with a smaller radiator than the existing one (it is 27-1/2") and switching over to an electric fan set up at the same time?
I would think that this would provide sufficient cooling with the addition of the fan. I would rather spend the $$$ upgrading the radiator and adding the fan rather than just buying a replacement core for the 74'.
There's a good chance you can get away with running the smaller radiator with your 390. That is, assuming everything is in good shape and your engine is tuned up.
However, the 78/79 core supports are different as far as how the headlights mount. You will need to drill holes in order to place your headlight buckets in the correct spot.
My recommendation would be to look for a good used support, like your original. They are still out there. I have a couple here in MI if you're out this way.
