The dash light did come on but I'm assuming it did because of the BOOSTER giving out.
There was vaccume at the end of the hose going to the BOOSTER from the vaccume sensor.
So it's probably a bad BOOSTER.
$140 + core $80 = $220
I'll check the wreckers and see if I can find a used 1.
before you waste money on the booster, check vacuum with a gauge. 6 inches vacuum will still suck your finger when applied on the hose, but it is not enough to work the brakes.
I agree with tjc, get a vaccume gauge and check what the vaccume pump is doing. I have had pumps that would suck my finger, but it was not enough for the brakes.
