Every morning when the engine is dead cold (50degrees) I have the hardest time getting it started.Im 99% sure its the glow plugs, I think the rev up when i start it is from built up fuel, I did not have my foot on the pedal. YouTube - ‪VIDEO0001‬‏
That's exactly what i would guess. does the wait to start light come on? if so for how long? A lot people say 20 seconds max on cranking the starter and let cool for 2 min so should get that taken care of before you risk damage to starter
26 seconds at a time is harmful to the starter.
you want 15 seconds (20 max) crank, followed by 2 minute cool down period before attempting again.
ideally, the engine should fire right up within a second on its first attempt (above 0 degree's.yes mine does.)
this is assuming the compression is very good, the starting and glow plug system top notch as well.
you really should consider testing them glow plugs, before it leads to a starter replacement.
i see lots of white smoke indicating fuel,so your on the right track by thinking about glow plugs.
only takes a couple minutes to test them you know?
most agree, replace with motorcraft/beru ONLY (anything else could lead to pulling a head, and or scared pistons or worse.search around here and any other diesel site if ya want.i couldn't be PAYED[well,i suppose if i was offered 2 grand.id still have to sleep on it.if i were to accept, the terms and conditions would need to be set strict,or id just bump my timing up to burn them right out quickly lol] to run anything besides BERU in my engine,if this helps/saves ya some search time.)
I will probably test them tomorrow, I replaced all of them with the Autolite brand exactly one month ago (I didn't know about how bad they were until now) oh and just got back from 2100 mile road trip with that truck I can replace the tach sensor also. When it starts like that is it bad to the engine when it does the rev up when it fires up?
no the engine has a high idle switch that comes on. The starting instructions for this engine are to have the pedal at half throttle...the little rev up and back down wont hurt nothing, my 84 does it. and EEGADS!! Take those Autolites out lol. The tach sensor is always a good idea so you can calculate your Fuel Economy.
Oh ok thanks that makes me feel better, the tach works it just sometimes it decides to take a break and that might be affecting the shifting on the truck.
not tight. i think it is something like 15 inch pounds.
i put a dab of never seize on the threads, snug them by finger then snug them down with a 1/4 drive ratchet.
