Well, we left home today and drove from home in MD. to Williamsport, PA. EGT's going up hills never went over 1000-1050 at 12-15 lbs of boost. Cruising around 60 ish they were mostly around 600-800. Got close to 1200 once accelerating up a hill after slowing down for a slow poke. Trans. temp. never went above 180 degrees. We are towing a 16' trailer with 6000 lbs of tractors plus what we have in the truck. I would guess I am towing 7200 lbs. incl. trailer weight. Tomorrow will be an interesting day as we are going to be seeing bigger hills on our way to Canandaigua, NY. Next on the list of mods will be bigger exhaust to lower EGT's, and a trans. cooler. Thanks for all the help during my gauge install.
One thing I did notice is that when stopping for a break I was going to let the truck idle until the EGT's got down to 300, but by the time I found a parking place big enough for the truck and trailer it was down to 350 anyway. So I didn't need to sit and wait for it to cool down.
Those numbers sound typical for a stock tune, which is designed to be safe. Kudos for addressing EGT and tranny temps! Those can kill your motor and tranny in pretty short order. After going over the "bigger hills" how did the tranny temps look?
Sounds like you are laying a solid foundation of mods to support a tuner.
We were pretty much going up hills and then level spots all day. Trans temps never really came down, but also never went over 180. Today we left Williamsport, Pa. on out way to Canandaigua, NY. A little cooler day but bigger and longer grades. Still tranny temps never went above 160!! I'm happy!! As far as a solid base for doing mods, it's all because of the great group of people on this site. I read, and asked questions and then did what I thought were the first logical steps. A tuner is in my future, just not for awhile!! Thanks again!! Tom
