I got an 87' f-150 4.9L and Im thinking about putting a dual exhaust system on. I stopped at a local exhaust shop because they were running a special on flowmaster exhaust systems (or at least the muffler is flowmaster) He told me that a duel system for that would be roughly $350 parts and labor included, I think thats a good deal personally but he said the 4.9L isnt a great sounding engine with duals just because it only exits out one side of the engine.
My question is, does anyone have a 4.9L with duals that I could possibly watch a video of to listen to it, to see if I think my truck would sound good with duals or not. I dont want to spend all that money and still not be happy with the sound of my exhaust...
At idle, a 6 with headers, etc will sound decent, at higher RPMs it will be "buzzy", unfortunately it's the nature of the beast. We did a 300 6 for a 77 4x4 a few years ago. Cam, increased CR, split style header w/duals, intake, ported head, etc. All the goodies... at idle it sounded plenty wicked, nice rumpty rumpty loping idle, hit the go peddle, and it still had the 6cyl "buzz".
to me ive only heard a few good sounding inline sixs check out the inline six form they have a exuast thread stickey most of the inline sixes ive heard sound like ricers only with *****
i def dont want to sound like no ricer, damn fart cans they put on them stupid things. I was going to buy a thrush turbo muffler today to replace my glass pack, 30 bucks, but I was out of money. right now I'd like just to get it to quiet down some but with more of a deep throaty tone, but Idk how well I can do that with just a stock tail pipe, a hollowed out cat, stock headers and a cheap muffler. I really cant spend too much on it right now.
Mine has a Si/SO Dynomax muffler...and exits in front of the rear tire.....And it is sooooo freakin raspy.....Imagine rally car raspy....No lowend ***** though...
True duals on an I6 makes little to no sense at all. It doesn't move that much air. Also, I would put a Dynomax super turbo muffler on it and leave it like that. If you make it loud it will probably just end up being annoying and not sound good. If you really want the look of duals, then get a single in dual out muffler.
IMO if it's not a V8 or American V-twin it shouldn't be heard. Everything else sounds like crap. But that's just my opinion.
For mufflers, look at the Thrush Welded. They're a lot cheaper than Flows plus they don't give an engine that terrible, standardized "Flowmaster" sound. Typical they have the lower deeper tone that I think that you're after. I have single in dual out one on my Expedition and it sound great at idle and part throttle and smoothes out very mellow at cruising speeds which would help with the I6 drone.
i was looking at the Thrush welded ones the other day, i was trying to pick between the welded and the turbo one, i think i like the turbo one better to be honest plus its only 30 bucks, but im going to have to put some adapters on it i think cause its a 2 1/2 inch and my system is only 2 1/4 i think

I tried that exact one on my 94.....Sounded like one sick puppy....I nearly barfed when I started the truck up....
You want SOUND? Go Borla....
Thats my next exhaust....High as hell, but sounds awesome....And then again, I haven't seen anyone running a Borla muffler on a inliner....Definantly somethin different...
