It does take a bit of adapting to make it work, but it can be a cheaper route than the full stand-alone controller. The stand-alone is pretty much plug and play, while the factory IDI requires a bit of tinkering. If you're like me, time is far more available than money.......

Amen! My next question is, do you know anybody that has done it for me to talk to?

Well, I ended up with a FREE E4OD transmission the other day......it needs rebuilding. So, if I get it rebuilt what else will I need for the converstion? I plan on pulling a driveshaft from another truck to get the length and yoke right. Now, what all is involved in the controller? Do I just find a j/y controller?

What about the speedo? I see on this E4OD there is a block off plate where the speedo cable bolts to....is there a speedo gear inside there?

Thanks for any help guys........

I don't plan on doing this soon, just want to start researching and collecting parts. Thanks!

I can't really help on the controller, aside from having heard that the IDI controller can be adapted to an older gas or diesel engine that lacks a computer. Not sure how much different it would be for the EFI system used in 85/86. This ECU is not compatible with the trans controller from a later EFI engine, as I understand it.

As for the speedo gear question, pop the plate off and look inside. It wouldn't surprise me to find a drive gear cast into the output shaft. The E4OD came along prior to the electronic speedo.
I've heard that this trans can be used with a V8 conversion in a 93+ ranger by swapping the speed sensor from the trans into the E4OD. The ranger speedo is driven by a sensor inserted into the speedo cable hole, and uses standard speedo gears to calibate. This would seem to indicate the drive gear exists in the E4OD......

Oddly enough, Ray, I was reading this thread to figure out if it answers the question you asked in the PM to me. And, now I see you are "in the loop" already. Good deal. I'll back out and leave you with it.
