I love everything about my 1990 F-150 except for the E4OD under it. I have been told that the C6 was availble in some trucks/broncos from this era. My question is: can the conversion be made from E4OD to C6? The biggest obstacle in doing this (I think) would be figuring out what to do with those wires running to the E4OD when a C6 is in its place. Could this be overcome with a simple switching of the wiring harness? Any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, no one else has responded, so I'll give it a shot. About the wires, I would call your local Ford dealer and ask the service techs about it. A few other things to check are: Make sure the bellhousing bolt patterns are the same, the xfer case bolt patterns are the same, and you may have to lengthen/shorten your driveshafts, or get new ones built up.
Good Luck

Do you tow or work that truck very hard? If not, I would suggest having it rebuilt by someone who knows how to "FIX" these trannies right. Might cost a little more in the long run, but you will still have OD.If you are still determined to change to a C6 (cant really blame you), there is probably someone out there who will trade you all of the parts so HE can have OD. Kill two birds w/one stone and you are guarranteed to have all of the parts. Just a thought!
the OD is really not an issue- I use the truck to tow a boat, usually under 100 miles a trip- so I wouldn't really miss it. The truth is, I turn the OD off on the E4OD most of the time anyway.
But, since you brought it up, let me ask this question (to anyone who might be able to answer)- exactly what does the E4OD need to be "built right"? Pardon my ignorance of auto trannies- my philosophy is that real trucks have three pedals anyway- but as I said above- I love my truck- and I'm not about to tackle a conversion to standard shift.

Nate, I also have a 90 F150 with the E4OD behind an I-6. My tranny has 130K-plus and works well, but I'm also interested in putting a C6 in mine when the E4OD dies (don't know when that'll be). I've been told that it can't be done (on this forum) since the PCM and E4OD work in synch. But, since Ford did make the 89 F150's with C6, I'm wondering whether the swap would entail more than just the tranny/driveshaft swap and an earlier PCM (88-89). I've also checked on getting the E4OD 'built' and that ranges from $200 to $300 for a shift kit to $2000 for a complete rebuild. I'm gonna keep mine maintained, drive it til it drops out and then investigate the C6 swap like I mentioned above. If you learn any more about this, would like to hear about it (tmcalavy@llano.net).
EEC-IV controls the solenoids in the E4OD to vary pressure, and to do the shifts. So those are EEC outputs, and are don't cares for a C6. EEC also reads a thermistor in the E4OD to sense trans temp, and it uses that in the shift point schedule. That's another don't care. You will have to connect up you own neutral start safety switch and back-up light switch, however. And I don't remember anymore, was the C6 a governor-shifted trans, or did it need some intake vacuum for a modulator?
You may be overlooking something here. Usually the overdrive transmission is used in conjunction with a low gear (rearend), maybe 3.50:1 ratio. The C6 is designed to be used with a a "higher" gear. So, simply changing transmissions may get you into 3rd gear real fast......and mileage will go down the tubes as well. Not gospel, just something to explore afore you make the plunge.
the rear gears are a valid concern- but mine are 3.08- so not a prob in my truck. I'm wanting to put in a 9" anyway- so swapping won't be a big deal. My biggest obstacle is finding out what info, if any, the tranny sends back to the 'puter and how to overcome this. I have looked everywhere I can think, but haven't been able to find info that would help. I know a former dealership mech who might help- that is, if I can squeeze some free advice from him. I'm still following this thread, absorbing all the info. If I find anything out, I'll share what I know. Thank you all so far.

One way that I've heard to beat the computer is to remove the shift module from the e4od and keep it plugged into the harness in nuetral. This is suppose to keep the computer from knowing that the wrong transmission is in the truck.
On the other hand, I would like to know if my BW 13-56 xfer case will bolt up to the c6
