Can I get some input as to what are safe temps for my EGTs? I pull a very heavy trailer (18,000 lbs). I have been backing off the throttle at about 1100'F but the truck really feels like it is pulling great there and seams like it has alot more to offer. I am using the SCT "canned" 50HP towing tune.
depends on where the probe is. my let off point is 1600. but i only hit 1400 at about 80mph and then it slowly starts to drop off. when towing i can hit 1200 all day long on a good hill. my turbo and truck are still puring right along.
I will be pulling the trailer from North Pole AK to South Georgia in a few weeks and just want to make sure I am treating the truck right. I guess maybe I COULD run it a little harder
If you're running a stock truck, stock tuning, it probably won't do much more than 1200-1300. So it really isn't a concern. Watch your EOT and ECT instead to determine when to back off a little.
Only the tuned trucks will hit 1400 or more in my experience. And towing with a tune isn't the wisest move IMO.

bpounds; I have read this quite often but never seen why. Is it too protect the trans. from slippage? or just high ect and eot.? I have full gauges so I can monitor the temps. and boost.. I have been looking into the SCT canned tunes like Cheezit's and was curious of the dangers.. I would be like the OP here on the lowest setting if I go that route.
Towing/hauling stresses the engine more than anything else you do. More than racing even. Cylinder pressures and temps are higher than original design specs. You can't add 50HP without exceeding the design specs.
Tuning to improve throttle response and added power when not towing adds stresses too, but that tends to be short bursts of acceleration, while towing may be for very long periods.
I don't think there is a problem with the transmission if the tunes are written well. Although the OP said he was running the canned SCT tunes. They are probably okay on the trans, but I don't really know.
Personally I don't run a tuner. So I am definitely not an expert on tuning. But there is no getting around the fact that towing with tunes increases pressures and temps. You can see that by the EGT's that result. The tune writers recognize this fact too, that's why their towing tunes are "only" 50HP. How much more power is okay? Beats me.
i agree with bpounds to a point. it does add alot more stress to the motor but i tow with my tow tune. really all my tow tune is, is firmer shift for the tranny and has maybe 25hp if that. not gonna lie i have towed with my race tune before. granted the power is crazy awesome but you can screw some things up really quick. i have studs and not saying that i was safe in doing so by any means but towing with high hp tunes isnt good at all. i only did it because i was runnin right down the road. if you pull with a tuner make sure you get a tune/use the tow tune when towing or run stock
Thanks for the input, it all makes sense. These engines have plenty of power in my opinion. Manily looking at the turbo braking and speed limit delete. I will be trying this with much care...

I will say that my fuel mileage went down when I started towing with the tune. Shame cause it was pulling awesome
