If you buy an old enough Ford truck, you can find one which already has a 9" in it; the 1969 F-150 that my dad had while I was in high school came stock with one.

dose'nt the speedo run off the transmission? look under the rest of your vehicles. 3.50 gears with a side oiler?

Looked under mine and had very many auto mechanics say "your speedo's broken", I reply "It is? Well, it's working right now. It gets fed off the diff." But that's because the usual cable is unplugged and capped by the extension housing.

The 8.8 is every bit as strong as any junkyard 1/2 ton 9" you're gonna find and if you do need something stouter then upgrade the axles and install a c-clip eliminator or swap in a 10.25.

well i keep knocking out my rears in my trucks, well only one in each of my '96 but its because the diff covers pilled back a few times when i went off road and the last time i didn't catch it. the gaskets always leak and on my last the pinion seal leaked out all my fluid dried out and locked up. all my other parts trucks and off-road truck the diff covers leaked or rotted out and i dont want to have to worry about those problems anymore. i always forget to look at my trucks to check out the rears so if i do a 9in swap i will not need to worry about it anymore.....

The Ford 9'" is much stronger than an 8.8 and has a very large following as well as aftermarket support. It came with 31 splined shaft in all full sized trucks and can be upgraded to 35 and 40 splined shafts. The 9" also has the extra bearing supporting the pinion. Fullsized Broncos used them up to 86 I believe, but if your looking for something even stronger, there's Dana 60's, 10.25/10.50 and the 14 bolt. The 10.25 / 10.50 have the smallest aftermarket following. The 8.8 is no sluch but better in smaller trucks and such....just my .02cents

ya that was another thing that i was thinking about the 9in does have a lot of aftermarket stuff but i think the 8.8in has almost as much so its not that big of deal... and i was thinking about running a 10.25 in the rear and since im doing a SAS and want to keep my front coil sprung i was thinking about just using the 1/2 ton DANA 44 housing and swapping everything from the my 3/4 ton DANA 44 so both the front and back are 8 bolt.... but im still not sure what way i want to go so im researching it

Not on the later models, I can't remember for sure but I think it was around 90, 91, or 92.. I'm sure there is someone who remembers, and will chime in.

Put a rear main girdle/cover on it and use RTV instead of a gasket. You can also weld the axle tubes to the differential.

To swap one in have to move you speedo to your trannsfercase. I have done it to mine its not bad at all, and cheap using ford stuff.

If you got a 2wd then get ready to forksome cash over.

Or just machine the exciter gear to fit a 9 inch

Then you got to cut and drill the housing for the sensor in the top. None of this is bad but why.... when you can do it for 10 worth of junk yard parts? There a guy arround here that did the machining option. Very good option if you got a 2wd.
