Trans compatability

Overheated my E4OD in my Bronco with 5.8L ,cannot find a used one locally .Plenty of 2-wheel drive ones available ,anyone know if a 2-wheel drive will work ? maybe just a matter of removing tailshaft housing ?

You should be able to swap tailshaft housings AND tailshafts. E4OD has it bolted on unlike some other trans models that have cast as part of the main casing.

BUT, I believe inorder to swap tailshafts you have to take whole trans apart

yep tail should be compatible. if not or too much work, sell the trans or return it. you got nothing to lose because you can't drive your truck right now anyways

Yes, to swap it over you need to pull the trans apart starting at the front.

take lots of measurements of the shaft on your broken transmission then just bolt on your tail housing to the 2 wd trans and re measure to see if they are the same dimensions.

if not...

tear your broken trans down to the point you can get the shaft out or if you can get that far with basic tools
