I'm in the process of replacing my instrument bezel, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how the round auxillary oil pressure/amps gauges com off. I don't see the hardware for holding on the chrome trim ring in front of the bezel.
Anyone on here ever taken these apart before? I really don't want to break anything trying, even the original brezel I'm replacing.
if its like the cluster i got for my 63 (round center speedo) then there should be two nuts holding a little metal bracket in place on the back of each gauge. the bezel stays on the gauge.
On each gauge (outer) there are nuts on the studs. You need to remove these nuts to remove gauges. If double nutted you need to remove all the nuts and the gauge will come out. If yours are rusted like the ones in the pictures, use PB blaster small wire brush and clead the threads the best you can.
What he said...the metal covers you see on the backside will then come off (they can stick to the plastic piece) and then the gauge itself comes out the front. The chrome rings stay on the gauges.
Ah, thanks guys! I should have thought of trying that.
Bad news there on the chrome rings staying on the gauges, though. Are you saying that they're actually part of the bezel itself and can't be removed?
The new bezel doesn't have holes provided for the oil pressure/amps gauges. I was going to cut them in & transfer the old chrome rings to the new bezel. I hate to ditch the oil pressure & amps gauges to have a shiny dash, but mine is even worse looking that the one in the pictures.
Correct...the gauge assembly itself has the stainless trim ring crimped on and is not serviceable. I know there are gauge restoration outfits that specialize in this type of work. The lenses on these gauges I believe are glass.
The chrome rings do come off (it's a little fussy of an operation), but you don't have to take them off to transfer the gauges do your new bezel. I refurbish these instrument clusters (not restore) for the guy who doesn't want to drop the coin on a new bezel. It's amazing what can be accomplished with a little paint and some judicious cleaning:
