Cab Removal Question

Hi all-
It's my turn to do head gaskets and all of the other related fixes/mods.
Has anyone ever lifted the cab off with an overhead hoist?
I have a shop with a hoist strong enough and high enough to do it,
but don't know how to attach it safely without doing any body damage.
Has anyone done this, or have any ideas on how?
Thanks, Ed

I'll be removing my damaged cab with a knuckle boom, but not going to use it to put the good one on. Not saying it can't be done, but not wanting to try it.

Good to be safe. Our knuckle boom will lift 1500 lbs at full extension, which we won't be anywhere near. At the needed reach it will lift about 3000 lbs.

OP, what is the capacity of your overhead hoist?

The hoist is a 2 ton. It's a trolly type - rides overhead I-beams. I was not concerned with the capacity - I didn't want to do body damage if I put a brace through the cab (ext. cab). We were going to place a beam just under where the latches are for the rear 1/2 doors, and a strap to the engine area. I guess my question is would the body support itself being lifted that way?

i have lifted two cab's with a fork life. one was a 4dr the other an ext cab. unfortuately both got some damage to the roof. we used straps with no beam. I am about to do another and am wondering the same thing as you. what is the best way to run a strap or beam to not have any damage. the cab can hold it just fine. but i got a couple little wrinkles where the straps were.

I'll be watching the thread to see a great answer.

Thanks guys

I would get some heavy pipe or tubing and run it under the cab on each side, near where the running boards attach and where the lifting points are, then use a strap on each side connected to the pipe ends. That way the weight is supported by the floor pan and not the roof. This would require having the fenders off though.

being thats its basicly a chain fall you want to use its not gonna be easy.

I think I may try to weld a frame together that bolts to the bottom of the cab or slides under it and find a good lift point.

If it were me I would just pull the enigne.

For heads, I would just do them with the cab on. Maybe jack up the cab a few inches to give more clearance, but I would definitely not pull it. In my case, the cab is crunched and being replaced...

the ford pdf in the tech folder for doing head gaskets with cab on says nothing about removing the a/c box on the passenger side. is it nessesary to remove that? if so, how hard is it.

Replacing the #5 injector was very tight with the HVAC box in place, I can't imagine doing head studs without removing it.

I had no trouble getting it out, it was getting the torque wrench in there when installing the new one that was tough.

Also, we don't all have the tool assortment you have
