Well, I'm highly debating doing head studs if I pick up this truck. At this point I've only seen the heads done with the cab off and on a hoist. Well, I won't have the luxury of doing it that way unless I take some PTO and do it during work hours as the cab can't sit on the hoist. I've thought about trying to do it with the cab still on the truck as pulling the engine is out (PITA). I've heard it's not very fun at all with the cab still on the truck. Anyone have any experience doing it this way?
I have not done it YET... I hear that you can do it cab on.
And that is is a lot easer if you also are doing head-gaskets.
The trick is you place some or one (not sure here) of the studs
in the head and zip tie them so you can get the head in-place.
The problem is clearance near the firewall. I hear that you can do
a no head removal be moving the engine around with a jack.
What I ment by no head removal is replacing each bolt one at a time
so you don't replace a good gasket. You remove bolt and install the stud
and torque it down then do the next one. that way you don't break the
seal of the head-gasket. When I do mine I will replace the gaskets
and use FORD gaskets do to the problems with others.
Thinking I may pass on trying to do it with the cab on. For one it would involve me having to tow the truck in and out of the shop and it's not exactly something you can just push into a bay easily. I'm thinking I may just pay someone to do it and just pick up some extra hours at work to cover the cost. The only way I could do it at work is if I can tie up my own hoist for a few days. From what I've seen though it's not very nice to do it with the cab still on.
I took some pictures but haven't figured out how to post anything yet. My mechanic is doing it for me and he said no problem without the cab being removed.
Truck U on Speed channel just did an EGR delete kit and they did the head studs, etc. They did everything cab on. Obviously, they have all the cool stand up creepers and the shop to do it in, but they did all of it with cab on. I found a link to the intro, but not to the whole episode, it was a good one.
Done 2 with cab-on, engine in. Not too bad, and we didnt take out the heater box either. just loosened the motor mounts and jacked one side up to get enough clearance, then the other side when we got there.
I did mine last August in Phoenix, AZ in my driveway. I had read alot of posts where they said it was a PITA to do. But I did not think it was very hard at all. I pulled the passanger wheel well and ac cover. And I also borrowed an overhead creeper (a must). I used a cherry picker to pull the heads.
Well I just got my truck back Friday at the end of the day. It is a little louder than before I'm not sure if it is the new turbo (a Garrett a bigger than stock that fits right in ) or if it is leaking air some place it runs great except that it is a little noisier in the cap It might be the gogostage 1 ported manifold with the CFM elbow? one thing that I need some help with is that I have the engine light on that is not supposed to be since the SCT tuner with custom tunes from DP tuner were supposed to take care of that. these are the codes:
P 0407 egr
P 0488 egr throttle position control range performance
p 0603 internal control module keep alive memory error
Can any of you help me out with this really dont want to pay the mechanic any more. The first two have to do with the egr system that was deleted and I think after I talk with DP tuner we can fix but the third one I have no clue
