Hey all, What is the best engine build for a 92 fuel injected roller 302. It has the speed density systm. I want to go with summits 306 kit. What would be the best cam to go with the speed density. What all can i do to the heads. What about a bigger throttle body and a throttle body spacer. I want it to rin good but have that cam idle and sound. Should i go with a mass air conversion kit. Summit has them with a ford racing computer to go with it. Any of you guys have a nicely built 302 speed density. Thanks
If your looking for that "rumpety rump" big cam sound then speed density is not for you! Speed density will not tolerate the rolling vacuum that alot of cams produce. You can mod speed density motors pretty heavy but the galloping idle is a no-no. Take a look at my sig to see what I did. Cam selection on SD is critical so make sure you research this and utilize one that is "friendly" to the system.
I'm running a similiar setup to pigfarmer and mine runs great. But as said, you have to keep your vacumn if you don't want to spend the extra for the mass air.
What is the factory spec on the cam i have a what is the specs on yours pigfarmer? Ill go with the biggest cam i can but i really dont want to spend 350 on a mass air kit. Is my 92 motor a roller motor or not im not really sure. Can i port and polish my stock heads without problems. Will the 306 kit be ok? What is the difference between crank i have and the crank that comes in the kit. Does it have a longer stroke to it?
I'm not sure what the specs are on your cam. Following is the specs on the Comp cam that I'm using.

You need to talk with the reps from the cam company you choose. This cam works very well for me but all the cam companies should be able to provide you with a cam that is SD friendly. The lobe separation is very important for SD. I think the stock sep is 116 deg. This cam is 114 degrees and some may recomend as narrow as 112 degrees. Narrower than that probably will cause probs. with the system but there again make sure you get a cam designed specifically for the SD system.
After running this engine, I firmly believe that SD can make all the power you want and more. Component selection is critical tho to retain good driveability.
I don't believe your truck is roller equiped. As far as I know the fully equiped roller blocks didn't show up until 95. It's been said that blocks of this vintage are "roller ready" but have flat tappet cams installed. They can be converted to rollers with some minor machining or installation of kits specifically for this.
You can port and polish you heads. It takes alot of time. Mine took in excess of 40 hours to do. (That's 40 hours of actual running of the die grinder). Take a look at the article at FordMuscle.
The crank and rods in the 306 kit are identical to the factory parts. If your crank and rods aren't destroyed they can be reconditioned by a machine shop and you'll end up the same as buying the kit. The extra 4 cubic inches comes from the fact that they supply pistons that are .030 overbore. Most of the time the machine shop will recondition your block to 4.030. With the overbore your engine will then be a 306 instead of a 302.
If your looking for a stroker kit, look for 327,331 or 347 kits for the 302. They have the cranks with the longer throws.
