I am in the process of building a 302 to replace the 170k-mile unit from my '90 Bronco. My plan is to reuse the "speed density" electronics, rather than swapping to Mass Air.
From reading other threads here, it seems this IS possible, as long as I select components that are "speed density friendly". For example, I have been told that the LSA on the cam is critical. As such, I am planning to use a Crane "compu-cam", gt40 heads, an eldebrock intake, and headers.
It seems that, at worst, I may have to get a custom chip burned to make this setup work.
My question is this...would installing a stroker kit on my speed density motor cause any problems? I have been told that it won't, but I am not confident.
The only thing, from my understanding, that would cause your motor to idle incorrectly, would be if you used anything other than a camshaft with a 112 lobe seperation w/t speed density. Otherwise, you can do anything you want. I would recommend you have a chip burnt anyways though, to gain as much benefit from your mods as possible, besides if you stroke it and cram more air in, it may run fairly lean as the computer would still be trying to function as if it were a standard stroke motor, the computer on a speed density or mass air system does not compensate for add ons like a carb, so tuning (having a specific chip burnt) is the only way to reach full potential. The mass air only compensates for the idle, after that you still have to use a programmer or burn a chip like speed density. I am pretty sure you could go wilder with the cam if you have the chip burnt at the same time, you might wanna speak with a chip burner to be sure. YOu probably knew all that, sorry if I have wasted you time. Good luck, later
