I have a 1995 F150, 4WD, with a 351. The truck has 97,000 miles on it. The transmission began shifting very hard a few weeks ago. The strange thing is it will shift smoothly for several days and then it will shift hard for a few days. Could there be any minor problems that could be the cause of this or am I looking at a complete transmission rebuild?
When it shifts hard it may be in failure mode. Usually that flashes the OD cancel light. There should be one or more codes stored in the PCM indicating what's wrong.
A code reader for your truck should cost about $25 at many auto parts stores, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc. Get one and see if there are codes stored.
