I got rid of the front split rims (75 f350 dump)and put on one piece rims and now the front shakes violently at times....indexing problem? anyone know how to index the wheels?

Did you put rims from a late model (without the bevels) on the truck?

I tried that on my '78 F350, got some free late '80's rims and thought they would work.
Our trucks have the alternating bevels on the wheels to locate them on the hub. (lug centric)
On later models the center hole in the wheel rides on the center of the hub, locating (indexing) it to the hub and the nuts just hold the wheel onto the hub. (hub centric)
I had to go to the local tire shops to find rims.
Make sure you check the VERY closely, I came back with a 16.5 rim.
I picked up two for 10 a piece and two for 35 a piece, so the price does vary.
Hope this helps.
Mike

Mike,
Can you explain "alternating bevels"
Is this something that can be machined into the rims? I hate to toss these rims...$90 for the pair..
Did they see me comming?

bigjer..
Sorry I haven't replied sooner, I have been hauling the last couple days.
You do have dual wheels, right?
Is so..
By alternating bevels:
If you look at the flat area where the lug nuts go, you should see one of the holes has a depression that is countersunk below the surface of the wheel, the next hole should have a raised bevel above the surface of the rim, the next one counter sunk and so on...four countersunk and four raised.
The hubs on the truck have counter sunk bevels around all the wheel studs to allow you to put the first wheel on any way you want, but then the second wheel HAS to be indexed correctly or you will have only four raised bevels touching (not good) instead of all eight alternating bevels meshed taking the load (good).
Is that clear as mud?
I really don't think machining the rims you have would be a safe alternative to getting the right rims, as your wheels wouldn't engage the hubs correctly.
Don't trash the rims, some body with a later 1 ton will buy them.
Again, I hope it helps.
Mike

All the info applies to the front rims too.
You still have the same bevels on the front hubs to engage.

Of course if you are looking for OEM without the split rims you can get them from "accuride" they are the OEM suppliers for most of the Detroit trucks. They still carry rims for your truck.
