Ball joint press

Going to change the ball joints on my son's 96 F250 4x2. Been reading a little here and I think we can handle it. Everyone recomends using a balll joint press, using the free loan a tool at the autoparts store. Harbor Freight has this "4x4" kit on sale Four Wheel Drive Ball Joint Service Kit Would this kit work or should I look at their "normal" kit? I could use free one too but if given the opertunity to buy tools, even HF tools, if the price is reasonable, why not?

As far as ball joints, MOOG seems to be the ones to get. But, wow, twice the price as all the rest.

If anyone knows of a good post on replacing ball joints on a 4x2 F250 I'd like to read up on it. Thanks.

I found a video on youtube on how to replace them. It's pretty helpful, and I think it should be the same for the f250. As for the press tool, I know you can rent it from Advanced Auto Parts or Napa. It's a lot cheaper and chances are you're only gonna need it once, so no need to buy one.

And I got the Moog parts, too. You can get them from Amazon for a lot cheaper than what you're gonna pay for them at an auto parts shop.

The one benefit of buying them locally is...if you need to exercise your lifetime warranty you can do a same day swap at a local parts place. If you buy them online it would probably take over a week to ship one back and recieve a replacement. Six of one, half dozen of another?? FWIW, I recommend MOOG.

If you need a replacement, do they ship it you before they recieve the bad one that you pay to ship back to them?

If you need a replacement, they ship it one day and you have a month to return the defective or or they will charge you for both.

I found a video on youtube showing a 1999 F250 4x2 and it looks the same as the 1996. Shouldn't be that hard. Thank god for an AZ truck. No rust.

Searched the net and found the MOOG parts a lot cheaper than local.

Got all 4 ball joints replaced last weekend in about 5 hrs. Used the loan a tool from Autozone. It took some time but was not a hard job at all. (the local Pep Boys told my son it would take 2 weekends for him to do it himself) So now his truck has all new ball joints, all new tie rods, new rotors and pads, front shocks. It no longer shakes and shimmys when comming to a stop. Woohoo.
