got an 01 ex this winter.we've loved it. had to trade in the conversion van because it was too small with our sixth child on the way. anyway, we went to the drive in last night and realized there is a major problem with the excursion. the interior lights wont go off with the glass up! (kind of a big deal at the drive in with 3 kids laying there trying to learn the origins of magneto and professor x) here's my idea, if i find a wrecked excursion and get the "nubs" off of the glass and just stick them in the holes when my glass is actually up, would that work? (i hope that makes sense the way i'm asking it) any help/ advice appreciated.
They should go off after like 10-15 mins. Mine actually has a problem where the lights won't come on unless the front doors are open. The 2 rear or back hatch won't activate the lights.
There are a few write ups on here about dome light override switches. A different solution to the same problem. I think it is odd that my 2 passenger Chevy 3500 cargo van has a dome light override switch (next to the dimmer wheel and headlight switch) but my 8 passenger Excursion does not. I hate it when all the lights come on and wake up my sleeping kids.
"jhutche" has an interesting approach using the ground wires that I think I will use when I get around to installing my interrupt switch:
"I have a 2004 Eddie Bauer and went a different route. I tapped in to the ground wires for each of the lights and put toggle switches in the garage door opener compartment of the overhead consol. One switch shuts off the front and second row overhead lights, the second switch shuts off the 3rd row light. I left the cargo light alone since it has an override switch built in. It was pretty easy to do. You will need to drop the entertainment console as well as the front overhead to run the wires."
One day I'll get around to looking up the Explorer dimmer switch vs. ours in the electrical manual. My '04 Explorer had the same headlight/dimmer switch, but if you turned the dimmer all the way down there was a detent to override the interior lights. I'm guessing if you picked up an Explorer switch off ebay with a pigtail, you could pull the one wire you need out of the pigtail and use the Explorer switch for a completely "factory" overide switch.
Cael... The dome light mod is the fix that you want to research. Fixes the waking up the kids at night with bright light while traveling, and camping.
airjeff: When I was looking into the option of the factory looking switch like expedition uses I quickly found out it will be a pain in the X. The lights wiring goes thru a separate sealed module between fuse panel and switches. Not an easy get around as just plug in new switch and add wiring to it.
