hello all, i am new here, and very excited to be here! just a little background, i am 16 and live in southern idaho. My dad got me started in ford trucks at the age of five, since he has many project trucks from his teen years he bought. we have about 9 or ten trucks all ranging from 1947 to 1956. anyways i have a few questions for all of the more experienced people here.
first, i am looking at 1951 F6 that is fairy complete minus the 254 cu.in 6cyl. (i do have picures). it had a manure spreader on the back and is the larger wheelbase at 158 inches. i am wondering what you all think of buying this truck (it is a awesome price).
second, the truck i think has the widow maker rims and worn out tires so i would be shopping for tires and rims possiby so would it be possible to weld the widowmakers together so they wont split when aired up?
third, what would you rate the condition of the truck 1 being bad and 10 being a diamond in the rough.
Unless you plan on farming full time, which is a distinct possibility considering where you are and the pictures, this is not a very forgiving vehicle to take to the hamburger drive-inn or god forbid on a date, takes about 40 acres to turn her around, and although replacing the engine (stock or otherwise) would be a great learning experience it is a big job. I would suggest that you start with a half ton pickup as a project; the up front price is not always the cheapest way in the long run.
The nickname for the 51-52 f1 (I have one) is the “manure spreader” grill so if you got the f6 it would be hard to tell if it was coming or going. ........................Better then one of them “Monkey faces” (48-50) though.
ok sorry about the multiple posts. being a little slow and didnt read some things.
anyways just a little more info about me, i can do some welding i.e. oxy-acetleyne and arc, very little MIG and gonna learn TIG as well. i am a little experienced in this hobby and i am part of a local car club(mostly chevy people) but they are willing to help. sorry again about the picture issue.
Welcome to the forum. It seems like you have a lot of support, which you will need for a project like this. If you have access to any F6 that you can drive around it would help you appreciate what OldF1 is saying. My driving vehicle is a Honda Civic and parking lots are made for it. Our GMC is a crew cab and parking lots are not so friendly.
What ever you decide to do, please keep us posted on the project.
Old F1 has an excellent point, what are your plans for the F6?
If it will be your first project and just for farm work or parades, I would say go for it. The bigger trucks are cool, just not a big market for them and not real practical if you want to drive around.
Boy I would love to see your dad's collection.
Here is your truck so folks don't have to hunt.

thanks for the thoughts, my vision if you will for this truck is as follows:
-ditch the f6 two ton frame
-my dad has a 53 longbed frame that may become the chassis for this truck
-possibly install the eaton two speed axle on the new frame if i have enough room.
- build some type of bed for the rear
- i have a really clean 239 EAB to put under the hood and see about using the existing 4 speed syncro that is in the truck.
- use a 53to 56 front end so a disk brake kit on the front
what do you all think? i am looking for a fairly stock looking truck like a f2 or f3 with a little saftey added. simple enough right? or am i just dreaming.
hi again, my dad has a lot of the original chassis parts for the 53-56 so correct me if i am wrong but possibly a dana 60 or if it will fit the eaton two speed thats under the truck now. anyone is welcome to comment (even if its god, bad, or ugly)
I think you would be better off trying to find a 48 t0 52 frame as the 53 you mentioned is different in dimensions of front frame rails and all your mounting points. Check your fathers field again and take a camera, sounds like you have a field of dreams.
If you're going to go through the hassle of bolting the cab onto another frame I'd strongly suggest ditching the big axle. First, replacements for the Wm's are hard to find. You can't weld the Wm's together to make them one piece rims. You would never be able to get a tire over the rim lip, multi-part rims have a higher side lip than a tubeless rim. Even if you could weld them together getting to balance would be a big challenge.
The best suggestion is to find a smaller F-1 frame, or maybe a F-2, to mount the cab. You will have a lot more options for drive trains and upgrades.
the frame swap is just a idea, a idea that my half ton only father is despratly trying to get me to do. i may just use the exising frame and chassis but take out leafs in the springs to soften the ride and lower the truck a bit. my dad is so negitive about it such as insurance and registration. i think is a truck that needs some tlc and i am not afraid to help it out. like i said it dosent have the 254 six that goes in it but i may be able to talk the seller into selling that with the truck as well. i do have a EAB flattie that was pulled out of another truck that looks super clean that may find a home in this truck. once i buy the truck, where do you all reccomend starting?
Hi and welcome to FTE. If you end up using the F6 chassis there are probably tons of widow maker replacements in your neighborhood
I'm in salt lake and can access a bunch of 20" lockring wheels if you need them. Also I have an F2 and f 1 frame that you could have pretty cheap, if you end up needing one?
I also have a 52 F6 I'm rebuilding hopefully have back together soon.
