Question regarding mufflers

Now that I have the 51 F1 with a running 351W the question is about muffler selection. Back in the 50's we put on "Glass Pac's" for that V8 sound. How sweet it was! Does anyone know what muffler is available today that replicates the old V8 sound?

Thanks
Roger

Smithy's are still the same as they were in the '50's, Red's Headers sells them.

Porter Mufflers makes the best sounding "Steel Pac's" I've heard. I just got mine in for my flathead. Check out the sound clips on their website. Porter Mufflers

Most of the glass and steel packed straight through mufflers are too loud for my taste...plus, straight through mufflers won't pass state inspection where I live so I usually run Walker turbo mufflers. Whichever muffler you choose will be louder without tail pipes than with and for the most part louder with headers than without. Even stock mufflers run out the side with no tail pipes can be loud. Keep that in mnd...

Whats too loud mean? guess I aint that old yet. No state inspections here in redneck USA, but I have a turbo type glasspack that is real short and the real big and short tailpipe exits through my running boards. It may be a little loud for some but I like it. They have the perfect sound. I dont know the name of the mufflers but I have changed the mufflers about 4 times on my truck to get the sound right. I finally got it now.

Very true. The sound of my Smithy's changed completely when I finally got my tailpipes installed, much more mellow.

I'm surprised by the sound clips Porter has on the website; that Merc in the video sounds terrible, so does the Riviera audio clip. I just don't like that "bark" they both have. I like deep and m-e-l-l-o-w...

I noticed the Merc on the Porter site has the new "Shorty" mufflers on it. I went with the longer mufflers. I decided on 2" but the 1-3/4" would be a bit more mellow sounding with a flathead. For the old school sould 2" pipe into the muffler, then 1-3/4" out the rear would sound best.
