Looking for some ideas for my exhaust system,239 flathead, stepside box. I was thinking of making a single stack on the passenger side with a cherry bomb underneath. Currently has a big can muffler that is probably fairly restrictive and very quiet for a cool old truck.
fentons, porter mufflers (or short glass packs) and 1.75 pipe.
As far as I know, Fenton never made any headers that would clear the steering box? I tried really hard with a set I had and gave up. Red's Headers with their extensions, Smithy's, and 1.75" pipes to the rear is where I ended up, it sounds great. Unless you take them to the rear, they are too loud and harsh IMO.
I've seen different lengths of Smithy's available. From memory, I think there's a 22", 24 or 26" and a 30". I'm assuming the longer the muffler, the mellower the tone. What size are you guys runing?

Sorry, I should have said reds also since I've haven't tried fitting fentons on an F1. I do have them on my '47 car, it's tight but they do fit. My '47 car is running 16" glass packs.
Would 2" pipe be too big for a 276 cid flathead running a Max 1 cam and 390 cfm 4bbl? I've got Red's headers and Porter mufflers but haven't built the exhaust yet.

Yes,1.75 is all they need. With 2" the sound is supposedly harsh. Even a 276 flatty just isn't that big of an engine.
