Engaging the brain...

I thought for a long time about whether or not to post this. Ultimately, however, I wanted to write it because I think it is healthy to laugh at ourselves on occasion. And I certainly needed to today.

I am rebuilding a Q.jet carb, and tested the e.choke. It didn't work, so I took my tools to the j/yard and pulled about 5 of them. But each one I hooked up to a battery refused to move, new, old, shiny, dirty.

Then it occurred to me: I was standing there on a 85* day, with a temperature sensitive devise, expecting it to expand further on a hot day!! When I realized how foolish I could be, I had to laugh. I had not even been thinking about what I was doing. My mind was on the troubles of life, busy, no doubt, making more with my choke.

Silly question, but did you insure they were grounding? Electricity always seems to work much better when the loop is complete.......

Isn't that odd how things work better--or work at all--when grounded? Yeps, all grounded. And nope, on an 85* day, no movement, and wouldn't expect to see any.

Stick the assembly in the freezer for a bit, and try again. I bet you will find results that way.......

Heh, certainly been there, my friend.

Ready to pull your hair out (or already did) because it just isn't working. Then realizing the answer as to why is so insultingly obvious.

As I made breakfast I put the choke in the freezer. Lo and behold, it moves fine. Now I just have hook a wire to it when cold and see if I have the same affect.

Amusing: Since the carb was under 'warranty' from the j/y, I took my receipt and the choke, and went to replace it free. The guy at the j/y entrance said, 'we only replace entire carburetors. You'll have the whole thing back.'

I even called the manager, but it was no use. I couldn't believe it. I tried to reason with him, and told him that I rebuilt the carb, and would not trade a rebuilt carb for a thirty-year-old one. No one puts a thirty-year-old carb on a car as is! I explained.

My statement was not meant to be harsh nor kind. It was merely an observation of cultural differences. IMO, ANYONE who takes a 30+ year-old carburetor and puts it on an engine w/o rebuilding it first, is asking for trouble.
