Injector identification

On top of the Injector that is closest to the fuel filter is a piece that the steel injector line connects to the injector. It is on the 7.3 and but not my 6.9. What is it and what does it Do?

yes.
because the 6.9's were originally timed with a different style meter than the 7.3ls.
you would use a meter that used a luminosity prode,that screws into a glow plug hole on #1 or #4.
latter a different style meter came along that reads the pulse off the #1 injection line (this adapter your seeing is on #4 for vans.)

that's right.
however if your actually trying to just ask;
can i remove the timing pulse adapter on my 7.3l engine will no ill effects.then the answer will be no,you cannot.
you need to maintain the correct length of this (and all) fuel line,otherwise your timing on #1 will be incorrect.this would mess up your ignition timing not due to what it is,but due to changing the length of the line if removed.
then of course you would be stuck with having to have the engine properly timed via the old school luminosity meter method.
so i think what your looking for,is should you try and connect the lines bypassing the thing because its leaking or something or replace it.
replace as need to avoid having an engine with a miss.

that seems pretty strait forward. I do have a leak there and wanted to ask you that actually would know what I was talking about so when I do go to get one I can explain it better. I am sure the parts guys will look at me and ask "well what is it or what does it do?"

When I purchased the 7.3 two months ago I switched the IP and Injectors from the 6.9 I drove for 7 years because they were only about 6 months old. Did I need to replace the #1 hard injector lines to keep the lenght correct. The 7.3 has a very rough Idle only when warm. The 6.9 runs purrrrfect all the time. I know that I moved all the injector lines with the pumps. Then I can't remember if I switched the #1 line so that it fit better or not. The question is is the 7.3 line shorter to make up for timing pulse adapter?

I am not sure when the rough idle started. It may or may not have been when I did the IP
I think that it ran fine for awhile but I am not sure
