General Concern

I have an '06 F250 6.0L Fx4, no egr delete, no head bolt mods, and not chipped. I'm hearing a lot about blowing head gaskets. Basically my question is, I'm pulling my boat down to the keys in July about a 4 hr ride and I am worried that the long load will heat the engine up and blow my heads?? I've got 117k miles, stock tires A/T, I noticed that when I pull my boat at 65 mph my turbo psi is about 8-10 and goes up to 15 if on a hill or passing. My boat is a 20 ft center console older heavy boat. Any thoughts or am I just stressin myself out for nothing??

Cheers,

You're probably stressing over nothing. Do you have good gauges? That's what you really need to monitor the health of the engine, and catch a problem before it becomes something worse.

Thanks David,
The only guages I have are the stock ones. I've heard the stock ones aren't too helpful, that they won't even show a 100 degree change, basically they'll move when its too late.

That's pretty accurate. You should go down to the 6.0L forum and read. Gauges are really important. Coolant and oil temperature are probably the most important. If the oil regularly is 15 degree's hotter than the coolant, you probably have a plugged oil cooler, which can lead to failures of the oil and/or EGR coolers, both of which are bad. Probably most head gasket problems are linked to EGR cooler failures. Other things to monitor are transmission oil temperature, if you have an automatic. Fuel pressure, to protect your injectors. And Exhaust Gas Temperature, to protect your turbocharger.

A lot of guys are using the ScanGuageII. It's cheap and will monitor a lot of things just by plugging into the OBD-II port. But it can't monitor fuel pressure or EGT. Another good option is the Edge Insight. It will monitor most necessary things off of the OBD-II port also, and can be fitted with sensors for fuel pressure and EGT, so you can have all your gauges in one place.

Easiest thing to do to keep the motor from leaving you stranded, is to monitor it with the ScangaugeII or Edge Insight CS/CTS. Big three, ECT/EOT (for delta and oil cooler health), and the FICM voltage. Everything else is great to keep an eye on though.

Keep all the maintanence up, and the fluids and filters changed, and you shoud be good to go.

I do keep up with the fluid changes, oil change every 3k and fuel filters every 6k. Everytime I change my oil I smell the oil and let it sit for a while and kind of do an inspection to see if theres any fluids in it other than oil and smell for a gas smell to it. Everything seems to be in working order no odors and or fluids other than oil.

If you do get a Scangauge II for the road, here is a link you should check out.

Just get some gauges, and you should be able to tell a lot.
