Got Tekonsha? (New towing setup)
I am about to have a hitch installed on my '74. For $399, they will install a class III hitch, install a Tekonsha "Voyager" brake controll unit and fully wire the truck for towing purposes.
What is the consensus on this package, particularly the Voyager unit?

I can't speak of the Voyager itself but I can say the Prodigy is great. Both use the same wiring connector at the rear of the unit so if you wire for one you can swap them out. Most opinions seem to run to the Prodigy. Run through this forum and read the thoughts of others. My Prodigy cost $99.97+ shipping. I bought a Valley Industries class III/IV reciever from Advanced Auto Parts for $99.88+(7%tax) My wiring adapter was $24.97+(7%) at Walmart. I did the install myself. As you can see $399.00 may be a bit steep. How ever the reciever was on sale (sale ends 3-31) and the Prodigy was on the internet (Ebay). It all depends on how much you can do and how much your time is worth. Now back to the controller. The prodigy I have is easy to use. After the set-up is matched to the trailer it just works without having to be fussed with. Now I have had it for only a short time but I'll keep it forever. One other thing the Voyager is only rated for 2 axles. The prodigy can handle 4 axles. Whatever you decide on I will only wish you the best.

The voyager 9030 has always been our workhorse.
installed literally thousands of them and only remember a couple being faulty.
The prodigy is becoming more and more popular though it's an expensive toy to get here in Canada.
The prodigy is a fully automatic controller compared to the Voyager. A couple of our guys put them in their trucks and are happy with them as well.

Got Tekonsha? (New towing setup)
I have a REALLY old Tekonsha (never noticed a model # or name) that I scavenged from a junkyard (like the rest of the truck) and I guess it works OK. Since I installed it, I haven't been towing trailers with brakes as much as I used to, so I can't really tell.
But I recently found another one (in a junkyard, of course , on a '90 F-350) that looks identical, except for the MONSTER heat sink on the back with a transistor in the middle and it's a 2035 Mark 24. It looks like it's set up to handle more brake axles. Is anyone familiar with these models? Can anyone tell me or post a link to the instructions for adjusting the sensitivity on them? Is the one with the heat sink significantly better than the one without? Any other interesting facts about either?

Steve, E-mail Tekonsha. They will send you info on that controller. Great customer service.
On a 74, there is no towpackage so all the wiring and such has to be installed. Either controller will work but the Prodigy is the best. Make sure the installer follows the directions like using a circut breaker instead of a fuse etc. What do you plan on towing with your 74? My 73 F350 had the old fashoned Kelsy-Hayes hydraulic controller. I never towed with it but I knew it was there by banging my knee into it often! Also, if you have an auto tranny add the largest cooler you can.
